Kilter Rural

Kilter Rural manage Australian farmland, water and ecosystem assets at scale, restoring landscapes as they go. The capital to grow it was global – and Australia’s water system is like nowhere else on earth.

40% of Kilter farmland is allocated to revegetation, wetland protection and ecological grazing. Then technology, experience and scale are added – growing high value crops, improving yields, supporting biodiversity. Their work is fundamental to the viability of rural communities.

Founded with $176 million from VicSuper in 2006, Kilter had grown to a team of 45+, three funds open to investors, the 2019 APAC Impact Asset Manager of the Year award, a fresh $50M mandate, and Regal Funds Management holding half the business.

Ahead: a global agricultural investing audience in New York. And a story that lived with the CEO.

Strategy

An international investor arriving at Kilter has to understand three things before the fund makes sense. How degraded landscapes are remediated into productive assets. How water was decoupled from land. And how the Australian water system came to exist at all – the dams, the entitlements, the market built on top of them.

None of that can be told by pointing a camera at a paddock. It needed animation, and a story built in layers – the full account for those ready to go deep, and short parts so people could choose their own journey through water, land, food and people.

And before any of it, the team talking the same language about what Kilter is.

Action

It started with a detailed review of Kilter’s business growth objectives and the current situation of the fund – then a plan to make it happen. Everything that follows came from that plan.

A brand uplift. Positioning statements with the senior executive, so the team talked the same language. Analysis of the existing marketing systems, and a forward roadmap.

Then a day of interviews with the team, and the story built from what they said.

I filmed and edited everything, guiding the animator and directing the narrative arc – how landscapes are remediated, how water decoupling works, how the Australian water system was formed through dams and water entitlements – making the thesis of the fund accessible for an audience arriving from anywhere in the world.

The full story came together in Kilter’s video engagement platform, so an investor could take as much or as little as they needed.

Below is the main video, which was separately cut into 4 parts: water, land, food, people.

After the platform launch (shown below), I further supported the CEO in creating and presenting a pitch to a global agricultural investing audience in New York.

Outcome

The story went to the world stage, and the platform kept working after the room emptied.

Since then, Regal has lifted its holding from 50% to 61%, and Kilter Rural is now part of the ASX-listed Regal Partners group – the same team, still managing farmland and water at scale.

If you’re taking a unique story to sophisticated investors – I can help you make it accessible, compelling and investable.

“Often you arrive with quite complex stories. Philip has a great knack for making the complex simple for others. Terrific at pulling together vision, pictures, to match your complex story and simplify it. If you’ve got a pitch that’s meaningful to you, and you need help with it I would thoroughly recommend you speak to Philip.”
