Happy New Year to you! Marian and I had a wonderful break spending 7 days away at the Renaissance Festival in South Eastern Victoria, both relaxing and performing with the Ballistix Drum Crew – we are excited to get back to telling compelling stories for our clients (and you if you aren’t yet a client!) – through January we are both attending a Mandarin Language Intensive study program with the Confucius Institute at Melbourne University in preparation for our further work in China – exciting times!

Assisting companies in Australia interact with Asian markets and assisting Chinese organisations to share their progress, products and potential with Western markets is something I am passionate about.

Waste, recycling, you, me and our society

Hey you, Victorian (Australian?) resident making 2 tons of waste per year, that figure isn’t going down I’m told it’s going up?! The word is Melbourne’s population of 3.5 million is on a trajectory to hit 8 million by 2050, unprecedented for developed cities as a growth percentage – and we have one of the largest foot prints of a city anywhere in the world – this growth means we have more in common with developing nations than developed ones from an infrastructure perspective*.

Back to those 2 tons a year..

Did you know the majority of European cities are putting 0 to 2% (that’s zero to two percent) of recyclable material into their landfills? What do you think the Australian percentage is? 40? 50? It’s 90%.

Not only do we produce more trash per person than the vast majority of our first world counter parts, our national waste management is such 90% of our waste goes unrecovered and gets stuck in the ground ‘as is’.

So.. Whilst this is an awesome truck (pictured below), which you can acquire yourself c/o wastech.com.au (and Ken Russ, pictured), looking after our society for now and the future starts with your purchasing decisions, then it ends with your level of awareness and relevant expectation of the way council and private enterprise process *your* waste.

Journalism – not scripts AKA Ask Better Questions

What’s it all for? 30 to 90 seconds – sometimes several 1-2 minute pieces – once we are on location, the set is lit, your staff have gone through grooming for the gents and make up for the ladies (or not if we in the field with your customers) we have a 20-30 minute conversation; nestled in that conversation is some usable stuff and then the gold jumps out.. it’s journalism, not scripts – you’re people and customers aren’t actors; don’t give them scripts, ask better questions that reveal answers you can share that support your sales and growth objectives.

Did you know Melbourne has had a sister city partnership with Jiangsu for over 20 years?

“.. Jiangsu province is China’s manufacturing powerhouse and accounts for more than 10% of China’s entire GDP. The province is only the size of Tasmania, but has a population over 75 million and its economy is the size of Indonesia’s (the world’s 16th strongest national economy). Jiangsu also boasts the most educated and skilled workforce in China. Jiangsu has been the sister state of Victoria for more than 20 years.. “

We spent an hour doing pre-departure interviews for the (ready for it) VECCI VJBP which translates as the Victorian Employers’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI) Victorian Jiangsu Business Placement program (VJBP).

Along with staff interviews for the Geelong Manufacturing Council, we headed out to interview the CEO / GM’s of Aus Pits, Huyck Wangner and Air Radiators

That’s not how you make porridge! Rightly so.. Who’s your biggest fan in life? Drag and drop WordPress with Divi

For the past fortnight Marian and I have been building with the ‘Divi’ WordPress theme from Elegant Themes – we both feel it’s perfect for what we did with it and has a lot more capacity on top of what we asked. Finishing client training with it yesterday, the drag and drop nature and general flow of the system is extremely user friendly. Site and video content will be live early March.

Shaping remarkable, innovative, profitable organisations

I’ve been doing broader research into organisational structure as a follow on from the Gary Hamel event I went to in early December (‘What matters NOW’ – c/o American Chamber of Commerce in Australia). Gary’s book ‘The Future of Management’ was an early read of mine that struck a chord.

How difficult would it be for a person in your organisation to get the money required to buy a chair? It’s a great question that stuck in my head and I’ve always thought adding more layers of bureaucracy was asinine to creating more resilient organisations.

A friend put me onto this video which goes into a lot of what Gary was talking about – If you don’t have 50 min, watch 11:00-12:30, then 39:45-41:00 then 22:49-38:05 – he also referenced David Guests ‘t-shaped professional’ concept which comes through in the Valve talk.

This ties into Hamel’s speech and you can see several photos I took during the day below – Gary referenced Morning Star alongside Gortex and you can see a short video from Morning Star I found, a more expansive view of the concepts from the people involved than the Valve talk.

All these references point out it starts with hiring the right people and the job of those people is to hire other great people as their primary endevour. With that aside, is it worth gutting an existing system to prepare for a new track? Maybe..
